I was able to dabble a little in photography when I was younger but with the high price of film and developing, it was difficult to pursue. I rediscovered my love of photography over a decade ago when my father-in-law gave me a digital camera. In the years that followed, I refined my photography skills through several photography workshops at a local community college. In the spring of 2006, I wanted to make photography a larger part of my life so I enrolled in a Professional Photography Certificate Program at The Center for Digital Imaging Arts at Boston University. There I studied photography with real-world professional photographers. The school was a great learning experience for me. (Both personally and professionally) When I became a serious photographer after graduation, I thought I wanted to be a traditional photographer that only took images of weddings or studio portraits. I was afraid that the stigma of an urban photographer was not who I really was. After a lot of coaxing from an art director and a mentor, I learned my true passion. You really capture someone sole by taking thier image when thier guard is down. Taking images of buildings from different angles, using leading lines, really takes me to my “happy place.” What I love about urban photography is that the rules are a little more flexible. Wedding and portrait photographers have STRICT rules that they must follow. With urban photography, I can use my skills and camera to tell my story. I hope that you take a minute and look at my work and take as much enjoyment out of it as did taking them. John O. Roy
